*** SECTION 1 - Installing the demo (DOS) ***
Begin by extracting the files to your hard disk. Do this by typing
PKUNZIP -d C97DEMOD.ZIP C:\CRICKET
If you wish to install to a directory other than C:\CRICKET, then
change all references to C:\CRICKET to the desired directory path.
Having extracted the files, the following directories should be present:
C:\CRICKET
C:\CRICKET\LEVELS
C:\CRICKET\LEVELS\320
C:\CRICKET\LEVELS\640
C:\CRICKET\LEVELS\FMV640
C:\CRICKET\VOX
Change to the directory that you have installed the cricket demo to,
by typing
CD C:\CRICKET
Now that you are in the cricket directory, type
SETUP
If the setup program crashes here, type
CONFIG2
Now run the setup program again.
The setup program should now run. Setup will prompt you to auto-detect
your soundcard. If you have any problems here, consult SECTION 3 - DOS
NOTES. After you have successfully configured your soundcard, select
the resolution you would like the demo to run in. You will then be
asked to verify your settings. Click OK when finished. The setup program
should now return you to your DOS prompt.
You may now type
CRICKET
and the demo should load and run.
*** SECTION 2 - Playing the demo ***
STARTING THE GAME
-----------------
On the main menu, click play. After the opening comments, the game
should begin.
GAME OPTIONS
------------
Once the game has begun, the following keys are available.
Pressing <Tab> before the bowler delivers the ball will give you access
to the in-game options.
Pressing <H> will access the in-game help. This explains all the in-game
keys.
Pressing the space bar will pause the game.
Keys <F1> to <F3> and +/- will alter the camera view.
GAME CONTROLS
-------------
In this demo, only keyboard control is available. The full version of
Cricket 97 has joystick and mouse control options.
The game difficulty can be adjusted to any of the three levels (easy,
normal and hard) by accessing the Game options screen (<Tab> key).
The game defaults to easy mode.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
In easy mode, the computer will automatically select a shot for you,
so that you may get used to the timing of the shot. Press <Ctrl> to
hit the ball, press <Ctrl> and <Alt> simultaneously to hit the ball
harder. Again, note that this is the default control system.
For normal and hard difficulty settings, the controls are as follows:
Directions are mapped to the numeric keypad:
7 8 9

Pressing a key on the keypad will move the batsman in the desired
direction.
When you wish to play a shot, press <Ctrl> or <Alt> in combination with
a direction. This gives you 18 different batting strokes to play.

After you have played at the ball, moving the batsman down will cause him
to run to the non-strikers end. Once you have completed a run, move up
to run again.
To slide your batsman in to the crease:
Press <Alt> to make the batsman dive at the non-striking end.
Press <Ctrl> to make the batsman dive at the striking end.
*** SECTION 3 - DOS NOTES ***
1 - THE INSTALL PROGRAM CRASHES WHEN I RUN IT.
This will most likely occur if UNIVBE does not support your video card.
If this occurs, run the program (ie Type) CONFIG2.BAT and try running
INSTALL again. If you still have problems, run CONFIG3.BAT and then
try running INSTALL again.
If you wish to return to the original configuration (ie you may have
changed your video card), run CONFIG1.BAT.
2 - THE GAME FREEZES ON THE FIRST FRAME OF THE CINEMA SEQUENCE.
This will occur if your sound card has not been correctly setup. If
this occurs, reboot your machine and select the AUTOMATIC option on
the sound configuration screen. If the automatic option does not
work, see point 3 below.
3 - THE SOUND AUTODETECT FEATURE CRASHES MY MACHINE
Although we have done our best to ensure that the AutoDetect option
works reliably for all sound cards, you may find that the Auto Detect
feature will crash your machine. If this occurs, try manually selecting
your card from the list. Once you have selected your card, you should
be able to use the Auto Detect Settings option to detect your sound card
settings.
If you are still having problems, there may be a chance that your sound
card is not setup correctly. To be sure that this is not the case, run
the diagnostic program that is supplied by the manufacturer of your
sound card. Then try running INSTALL again.
4 - THE GAME KEEPS DROPPING BACK TO DOS
CRICKET 97 needs to have a full 8 MEG of RAM in order to run. If you have
only 8 meg of RAM and the 'Stadium Detail' option is set to DX2-66 (see
point 4 above) and your version of Cricket is locking up, dropping back
to DOS, or generally crashing, then your memory may be full of other
stuff that is not allowing CRICKET 97 to run properly.
CACHES AND MEMORY MANAGERS
Remove any caches or memory managers. Some examples of these are:
SMARTDRV
NCACHE
QEMM
EMMSYS
You will find these commands or device drivers in your CONFIG.SYS or
AUTOEXEC.BAT files (both of these files can be found in the root of
C:\). To remove these commands you must edit the file and simply type
REM and a space at the start of the appropriate line.
Type
EDIT [FILENAME] from c:\ to edit the files.
Type
REM DEVICE=C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE to remove the cache or memory manager.
When you reboot your computer, these lines will not run and thus will
clear your memory.
DEVICE DRIVERS
If your version still crashes then you will have to remove the Device
Drivers. In the CONFIG.SYS file are a number of lines which have the
command DEVICE or DEVICEHIGH in them. You should REM these lines out
(as explained in CACHES AND MEMORY MANAGERS). The only lines you should
NOT TOUCH are the ones containing :
HIMEM.SYS
WINHIMEM.SYS
ANSI.SYS
MOUSE.SYS (or equivolent mouse driver)
5 - IF ALL ELSE FAILS
If you cannot free up enough memory to get CRICKET 97 to run, you may
want to try and create a DOS BOOT DISK. Information on how to create
a DOS BOOT DISK can be found in a file called BOOTDISK.TXT which is
located in the CRICKET directory on your hard disk.
*** SECTION 4 - NOTES ON RUNNING THE DOS VERSION UNDER WINDOWS '95 ***
1 - CRICKET WON'T RUN IN A DOS SHELL ON MY 8 MEG (RAM) MACHINE
CRICKET must have 16 Meg RAM or more to run in a DOS shell under
Windows '95. If you have only 8 Meg RAM or less in your machine,
the game will have to be run under DOS (or MS-DOS mode).
2 - MY MACHINE KEEPS JUMPING BACK TO THE WINDOWS DESKTOP DURING THE GAME.
When running the DOS version of CRICKET 97 under Windows 95, ensure
that your DOS window is full screen before starting t
